The Ruins of Ragynoc Tower

Page history last edited by nik harwood 13 years, 5 months ago

Thought it was about time I bunged some dice at my dungeon...and rather than play solo, I enlisted the help of my daughters [Tash, 12, and Daisy, 8; Isaac was more interested in fire engines today - although he did pinch some dice at one point - to make a caterpillar. It's fine. He's four  8)]

We used the Dungeon World rules - and very nice they are too - fun & fast  :)

Background: There are ruins below Ragynoc Tower [name comes from backwards spelling of Conygar Tower, Dunster, which is right opposite my house]; Tash chose the Wood Elf, Daisy the Mage. I used a simple die-rolling mechanism to determine next part of the dungeon layout as they proceeded. You can see the initial startpoint in this pic at the bottom - basically the crossroads piece & I laid out three corridor lengths to start with.

The girls wasted no time in progressing through the dark & dingy ruins, attracting no wandering monsters before finding the first room - guarded by four skeletons who animated as they entered:

This let us get the basics of combat sussed - and with some great dice-rolling & tactics [Daisy "Controlled Enemy" & parked a skellie in the corner so Tash could nail it with arrows  8)] they made short work of the undead & wasted no time in looting the room of treasure & food.

Daisy the Mage found a secret door too - which led towards an open room which, as they advanced, they could see held a Corpse Crawler - but also a well & a floor grate: so they decided it was worth exploring:

Again, some decent magic from Daisy the Mage & on-the-mark shooting from Tash the Pointy-Eared saw the Crawler skewered: but not before it had spat Acid at both of them, causing some wounds.

It's fair to say that Daisy shares my fondness for dice:

Another secret door in the north wall led to a larger room with a partially collapsed ceiling - and four zombies who shambled out of the darkness towards our intrepid adventurers...

They're not daft, my daughters, and decided to take the zeds on - on the basis that "there's a big door in the other wall - so there must be a load of treasure in there"  8)

Again, the combined tactics of the mage & the sharpshooter made short work of the undead shufflers...but not before they'd had a bash at munching chunks of Elfy-goodness! Tash was a bit worried at one point:

They found some hidden treasure in one of the rock slides...and moved swiftly on through the double doors to the north...only to find themselves confronting three giant Bone Spiders who hurtled out from the corners, giving the girls no time to react. This battle proved more difficult, even though the spiders failed to ensnare them in their webs...the arachnids are seriously tough and it was touch-and-go at one point before the girls again proved themselves better than me at dice-rolling and took them out...

The final treasure was theirs for the taking - as well as the thanks of the townspeople for clearing the Ruins of Ragynoc Tower.

Great stuff - took me back to my own first RPGing. Needless to say, the girls want to play more...I'll have to get some more nasties  :)
